Popular weight loss drugs linked to a surprising fingernail problem

ScienceDaily reports on a cross-sectional, multinational study presented at the EADV Congress 2026 comparing 575 GLP-1 users with 1,329 people with type 2 diabetes and/or obesity who never used the drugs. Self-reported nail detachment affected 39% of users versus 9% of nonusers, and hair loss and scalp redness were also more common. Researchers stress the findings reflect association, not causation. DUCRAY Laboratories supported the work.

Why it matters: Relevant to Maryland adults with obesity or type 2 diabetes using or considering GLP-1 medications, and to the clinicians who refer or monitor them.

New injection makes fat cells self-destruct

ScienceDaily, using materials from the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, reports on CBL-514, an experimental injection designed to make fat cells self-destruct. In a small phase 2 MRI analysis (n=23 drug, n=17 placebo), visceral fat fell an average 12.01% four weeks after the final injection while placebo recipients' rose 5.68%. Reduced weight regain after stopping tirzepatide was seen only in rats; phase 3 recruitment is underway.

Why it matters: Relevant to Maryland adults exploring medical weight loss or nonsurgical fat-reduction options, and to clinicians who field patient questions about experimental abdominal-fat treatments.

Stopping GLP-1 drugs often brings weight back. A small trial suggests ways to slow it

News-Medical reports on a small pilot trial of 39 adults who had stopped GLP-1 drugs after losing more than 10% of body weight. Over four months, those given medically tailored meals or the Noom app gained about 3.6% of body weight versus about 11% with usual care, in exploratory model estimates. Adherence and satisfaction, the primary outcomes, did not differ; both intervention groups still gained weight.

Why it matters: Relevant to adults who have recently stopped GLP-1 weight-loss medication, and to the clinicians who support patients through that transition.
